about
A re-arranged version of an acoustic song I wrote ages ago. This one's a bit of a hybrid of the original piano sketch and some heavier electronics to turn up the fire a bit.
The song is pretty personal. I tried to make it sound every bit as big as it feels, so this is best enjoyed at a high volume...
lyrics
They told you you were broken like a plate smashed on the floor
For years they tried to mend you, but they don't try anymore
The pieces, they were jagged, leaving my hands full of scars
I trace them like constellations, drawing stories out of stars
I stood guard like a soldier from the time that we were small
I threw stones at your monsters so they wouldn't seem so tall
But I had my own monster, and he lived inside your skin
You tried not to let him out, but you couldn't keep him in
(Run)
No one said that you have to forgive
No one said that you have to forget
Don't you know that it messed me up too
Don't you know it's my greatest regret...
I thought if I ran
I could make them see
Realize what they'd done to you
But instead they came looking for me
So if I were you, I would run, run, run, get away
'cause your family is not here today
And they never really have been anyway
You know you hurt me bad
Worse than they ever did
I've always been afraid of you
Ever since we both were kids
They flick their acid tongues
They speak about the blood in their veins
And then they use your memory
To wipe up the stains
If I could, I would run, run, run, run away
From you, from them, from everyone today
I thought you needed me, that's why I stay
Run.
No one said that you have to be brave
No one said that you can't get upset
Don't you know that I love you to death
Don't you know that I don't hate you yet...
If I were you, I'd be sick and tired of running so damn fast
So take a deep breath now and make it last
and maybe then we'll both outrun the past
